John McKesson Camp II is Professor of Archaeology with the American School of Classical Studies in Athens and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Professor of Classics with the Randolph-Macon College. Camp earned his B.A. from Harvard University and his M.A. and Ph.D. in classical archaeology from Princeton University. In 1966 he joined the Agora excavations, and in 1973 he was named the assistant director of the Agora excavations. Professor Camp served as the School’s Mellon Professor of Archaeology (1985-1996) and became the director of excavations at the Athenian Agora in 1994.
Camp joined the faculty at Randolph-Macon College in 1996, and in 2009 he was named the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Professor of Classics. He was also the 2015 recipient of the Aristeia Award for Distinguished Alumni/ae of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. The award honors those who have done the most over the years to support the School’s mission in teaching, research, archaeological exploration, and/or publication.
On May 12, 2016, the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA) presented Professor Camp with the Athens Prize at the Metropolitan Club in New York City for his stewardship of the Agora Excavations. Acting Trustee President William Loomis told attendees at their gala,
“John is the great link between the past and the future of American archaeology in Greece, the person who more than anyone else has been able to transmit the wisdom and experience of the great pioneers of the past to the next generation.”

Professor Camp Is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquities, a Corresponding Member of the Deutsches Archaologisches Institut, and Member of the Advisory Board for the American Institute of Archaeology’s American Journal of Archaeology.
