Tulsi Gabbard is the first female combat veteran elected to Congress and is currently in her fourth term representing the 2nd Congressional district of Hawaii.
Gabbard serves on the Foreign Affairs and Armed Services Committees where she’s been intimately involved in sensitive national security issues.
Before her election to Congress, Gabbard stepped down from her position as a Hawaii State legislator to voluntarily serve in Iraq with an Army National Guard combat unit.
A veteran of two tours of duty in the Middle East, and presently a major in the National Guard, Gabbard is an outspoken critic of regime change wars.
Gabbard was the youngest woman elected to a state legislature in the US at the age of 21. She was elected to serve on the Honolulu City Council after returning from her military service in the Middle East.
Gabbard previously served as vice-chair of the Democratic National Committee before resigning so she could support Bernie Sanders for president in 2016.
Gabbard is the first mixed-race American Samoan and the first Hindu member to serve in the US Congress.
